How to use social media for business without making an idiot of yourself

Getting started in social media is like showing up at a party where you don't know anyone: daunting at best and humiliating at worst. Add to that the additional challenges of accessing social media for business -- where it's so easy to mess up the balance between social norms and market norms -- and it's no wonder so many companies are even today delaying entering the twitterverse and the blogosphere.

This evening, I gave a presentation on precisely this topic to the International Association of Business Communicators here in Christchurch. I've included the slide deck below; the essence of the presentation is found in these four guidelines:

  1. Act with integrity
  2. Admit your mistakes
  3. Be audience-centric
  4. Be human.

Enjoy! Love to hear your feedback in the comments.
