English Is Tough Stuff

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.

Just compare heart, beard, and heard,

Hats off to Ig Nobel Prize winners!

We're celebrating the winners of Ig Nobel prizes who "first make people LAUGH, then make them THINK"!

Thank goodness for the likes of Dr van Bronswijk's and her exact tally of bed bugs (namely mites, insects, spiders, pseudoscorpions, crustaceans, bacteria, algae, ferns, and fungi) and Ivan Schwab and his explanation of why woodpeckers don't get headaches.

List originally published in greater depth by Improbable Research.

Wikileaks and the Great Expensive-vs-Free Information War

"On the one hand information wants to be expensive, because it's so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time. So you have these two fighting against each other." -Stewart Brand

Holy smokes, things change fast in the world of social media! Two weeks ago, we posted an episode of Ask Missing Link in which we discussed Facebook Page admins: specifically, that you could never change the originating Page admin. Well, the folks at Facebook must have been watching, because now you can! Watch the video for more info, as well as a tip on how to find Twitter users in your local area.

It's time for another episode of Ask Missing Link!
Trolls and Flamers: How to Respond to Negativity on Social Media

In my presentations about companies using social media, I'm often evangelizing the importance of being responsive to complaints, problems, or issues that might arise in the public space. On social media, oftentimes a problem ignored is a problem magnified. But, then, sometimes responding to a negative comment or post just drags you down into the mud, and something that wasn't originally a big deal blows up out of proportion. Just this morning, one of my workshop attendees asked me how to avoid coming across as defensive. How do you know when to respond and when to walk away?

Not all of our mothers taught us, “If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all”

Companies considering social media often ask us, “What if people say nasty things about us?”

Our answer is, “If people want to say nasty things about you, they are already doing so on other channels. Having an official social media presence allows you to respond.”
